Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi River. Located 18 miles east of the capital city of Atlanta is Stone Mountain, where a quartz monzonite dome rises 1680 feet above sea level. This dome is a landscape of bare rock and rock pools which are home to unusual fairy and clam shrimp, which only appear during the rainy season.
The mountain is more than 5 miles in circumference at its base and is surrounded by an oak-hickory forest and numerous shade-loving native plants. The rare Georgia oak was first discovered in 1849 at the summit of Stone Mountain. It is a small tree with shiny green leaves that turn brown in the fall and stay on the tree throughout the winter. Several specimens can be found along the trail that leads to the top of the mountain.
In the fall, the extremely rare Confederate Yellow Daisy appears in the rock crevices and Stone Mountain hosts the Yellow Daisy Festival, one of the most popular events in the Southeast United States.
